The Best Investment I've Ever Made in My Shop Wasn't a Designer. It Was BBG.
By Charlene Burzynski Owner of Bella Brides People often ask me what has helped Bella Brides grow over the last four years. While there isn't just one answer, one thing has consistently made a huge difference: the Better Bridal Group. Owning a bridal boutique means constantly learning. You're making decisions every day about your team, your brides, your inventory, your marketing, and a hundred other little things that all add up. Having a community of people who are walking that same path alongside you has been invaluable, and I truly don't think Bella Brides would be where it is today without BBG. But before I tell you why I feel so strongly about it, I have to start at the beginning, because the funny thing is... I never planned on owning a bridal boutique. I Didn't Grow Up Dreaming of Owning a Bridal Shop My career path wasn't exactly traditional, as is the case with most entrepreneurs. Before Bella Brides, I was a teacher. Like many people, I also spent time working corporate jobs that looked great on paper but left me feeling completely unfulfilled. They paid the bills, but they didn't feed my soul. I knew I wanted something different. I just had absolutely no idea what that "something" was. Ironically, it wasn't my own wedding that introduced me to bridal. It was one of my best friends'. When she got engaged, we made it our mission to find her dress. We traveled all over Oregon, visiting what felt like every bridal boutique in the state. Every appointment was...fine. Some were good. Some were snooty. Some had pretty dresses, but weren’t size-inclusive. Some were just flat out rude. Then we walked into Bella Brides. Everything changed. The atmosphere was warm. The stylists genuinely cared. There wasn't judgement waiting in every corner. Every interaction felt thoughtful, personal, and authentic. For the first time during our entire shopping journey, I thought, "This is how bridal shopping should feel." I walked out that day with a thought I couldn't shake: I have to work here someday. So... I Asked for a Job So I did what any slightly stubborn person would do. I pestered the owner until she finally agreed to let me work part-time doing the jobs no one else wanted. I wasn't styling brides, I was doing the grunt work. And you know what? I still loved it. Over time, I worked my way into a full-time role, then stylist, then a Master Stylist, then shop manager. Every position taught me something different about the business. I learned that success in bridal has almost nothing to do with selling dresses and everything to do with creating experiences people remember forever. Then one day, opportunity came knocking. The owner decided it was time for someone else to lead Bella Brides, and without hesitation, I jumped. Four years ago, I became the owner of a business that holds my heart and soul. It's still one of the best decisions I've ever made. My First Week as an Owner was Conference A huge blessing to me was that the previous owner was already involved with Better Bridal Group. She had already registered Bella Brides for the BBG Engaged Conference before I officially purchased the business. So literally within my first week of becoming owner, I packed my bags with swim suits, stylist clothes, and a (probably un)healthy amount of anxiety. Looking back, I honestly can't imagine a better way to begin this journey. I was operating on intuition, motivation, and some blind faith that if she could do it, I could do it.Though I didn’t know it yet, I NEEDED mentors, sounding boards, and like-minded people, and that is exactly what BBG has given me. I Found My Bridal Besties When I boarded that plane to my first BBG Conference, I expected to come home with new ideas for Bella Brides. What I never expected was to find my people. There is something incredibly special about walking into a room full of ambitious, creative, kind, kick-ass women who all happen to own bridal boutiques. These are women who have poured their hearts into building businesses, who aren't afraid to share their successes or their failures, and who genuinely want everyone around them to succeed. It's a community unlike anything I've experienced before, and quite honestly, it's a group of people I never would have found on my own. Within this incredible community, you'll naturally find your smaller circle. The people who just get you. The ones who become your bridal besties. I found mine that very first conference year, and they have become some of my closest friends. We talk every single day, I’m not exaggerating. We celebrate each other's wins, brainstorm ideas, help solve difficult customer situations, compare notes on dresses and designers, vent about the hard days, and cheer each other on through the exciting ones. Sometimes it's to ask, "Has anyone dealt with this before?" And sometimes it's simply to remind each other that we're doing a better job than we think we are. Collective Minds Create Better Businesses It’s so true that no one is as smart as everyone. That's exactly what BBG represents. The collective knowledge inside this community is incredible. Someone has already solved the problem you're facing. Someone has tested the marketing idea you're considering. Someone has figured out a better hiring process. Someone has navigated that difficult customer situation. Rather than reinventing the wheel, you get to learn from hundreds of years of combined experience. That kind of collaboration simply accelerates growth.I can confidently say Bella Brides would not be the business it is today without ideas that started inside BBG conversations. I Always Come Home with a Notebook Full of Ideas My team actually has a running joke. They know exactly what happens after conference. I come home absolutely overflowing with ideas and changes. Every. Single. Year. BBG brings in an incredible lineup of speakers who challenge me to think differently, push my business further, and introduce fresh ideas I can bring back to Bella Brides. I leave every presentation with pages of notes, a notebook full of ideas, and enough inspiration to keep me energized for months. My team jokes that the first staff meeting after conference is always a doozy because I come back ready to change everything. Not every idea gets implemented–some evolve, some get shelved for later, some become HUGE wins. But every conference pushes Bella Brides forward. BBG’s Secret Sauce But if I'm being completely honest, the speakers are only half of the value. The real magic happens everywhere in between. It happens over coffee before the first session. It happens walking between conference rooms, waiting in line for lunch, standing in hotel hallways, and sitting around the dinner table after the day's presentations are over. Those are the moments when someone says, "We actually tried that six months ago." Or, "Here's what worked for us." Or, "That idea is great, but here's how we adapted it for our market." Those conversations are priceless because they bridge the gap between inspiration and implementation. A speaker can introduce an incredible concept, but another bridal shop owner can help you figure out exactly how to make that idea work in your boutique, with your team, your brides, and your community. That's where ideas stop being notes in a notebook and start becoming meaningful change. People often ask me if it's really worth flying all the way from Bend, Oregon to Florida every single year for conference. My answer has never changed: absolutely. Without question. Between the incredible educational content, the conversations that happen outside the conference rooms, and the friendships that continue long after everyone flies home, I've never once questioned the investment. I've never missed a conference, and I don't plan to. Every year I come home a stronger business owner, a better leader, and even more excited about the future of Bella Brides. Thank You, Better Bridal Group Owning Bella Brides has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I get to work alongside an incredible team. I get to celebrate brides every single day. I get to build a business that reflects the values I care deeply about. But I also know that I didn't build this business alone. The Better Bridal Group community has challenged me, encouraged me, inspired me, and supported me from day one. It has connected me with lifelong friends. It has introduced me to ideas that have transformed our business. It has reminded me that collaboration will always be more powerful than competition. To anyone considering joining BBG or attending conference, my advice is simple: Go. Show up. Ask questions. Introduce yourself. Stay for the conversations after the presentations. Take notes. Exchange phone numbers. Find your people. Because you might walk away with far more than business ideas. You might find a community that changes the trajectory of your business and reminds you why you fell in love with this industry in the first place. I know I did.
